What to Pack for a Kerala Backwaters Holiday
Light layers, insect protection and a few houseboat essentials will keep a Munnar-to-Alleppey trip comfortable in any season.
Kerala is humid, green and unhurried. Packing light works better than over-preparing — especially if you are combining hill stations with a houseboat night on the backwaters.
Clothing: breathable cotton or linen, a light rain jacket, modest outfits for temples, and comfortable walking shoes plus sandals for the boat. Evenings on the water can feel cooler, so add one warm layer.
Health and comfort: reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, any regular medication, and a small first-aid kit. A dry bag or zip pouch keeps phones safe on the boat.
Houseboat nights usually include meals, so you do not need extra food. Carry a power bank; charging points can be limited. If you are heading to Munnar first, pack a slightly warmer layer for the hills.
The best rhythm is hills first, backwaters second: cooler mornings in the tea estates, then a slower finale on the water. Share any dietary needs when you book so the boat kitchen can plan ahead.
